General note | "The greater part of this little volume was written before the author's departure for Europe in May, 1839. It was intended as a continuation of the Love-Token. The tale entitled "Small losses" was sent from Germany in the form of a letter to a young friend. The History of Jacot was subsequently furnished. It was the author's design to complete the series by other sea-tales, but circumstances prevented her accomplishing this purpose. The volume was therefore completed, with the author's consent, by adding the "Deformed boy" and some other tales which have been before published, but unconnectedly, and in such modes as to prevent their general circulation."--Pref., dated at Lenox, Mass., July, 1840. |
